Starting solids around 6 months: readiness and first steps

Understand readiness for first foods, plan a calm first meal and find authoritative preparation and choking-safety guidance.

Check readiness together with age

NHS guidance describes three signs together around six months: staying seated with a steady head, coordinating food to the mouth, and swallowing rather than pushing food out. Discuss individual timing with your care team, especially for a premature baby or one with feeding difficulties.

Prepare before the first taste

Arrange an upright supported eating position and an adult who can stay throughout the meal. Read the food-preparation guidance linked below before choosing a shape or texture. Keep eating separate from play on the move. You can begin with a small offer; this is not a portion target.

Keep the first experience manageable

Pick a calm moment when you can focus on your baby. Prepare one suitable food and let them set the pace. Turning away may mean they have had enough. You can stop and try another day; finishing a bowl is not the purpose of the first experience.

Choose an approach that fits

Self-feeding and responsive spoon-feeding can both be part of family meals. Neither removes the need to prepare food safely. Follow current local advice about allergens, nutrition and milk feeds instead of treating a single recipe or method as a complete plan.

Learn safety from a practical source

Read the NHS preparation and choking guidance below, and find an infant first-aid course in your country. Do not rely on a short food article to teach an emergency skill. If your baby has difficulty swallowing or you are unsure how to adapt food, ask for individual help before proceeding.
