Check readiness first, then prepare a small batch and adapt its consistency. The ingredient quantities are for preparation, not a required serving size.
Before you begin
Begin solids around six months when your baby is developmentally ready. Continue usual milk feeds. Sit your baby upright and stay with them while eating. If feeding is difficult or your child has medical or allergy concerns, ask their clinician for individual guidance.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons plain rolled oats
- About 120 ml water, with more as needed
- Optional: a little mashed ripe banana already tolerated
How to prepare
- Put the oats and water in a small saucepan.
- Simmer gently, stirring, until the oats are thoroughly soft. Follow the oats’ cooking instructions and add water if the pan becomes dry.
- Mash or blend to a texture your baby can manage. Stir in the optional fruit.
- Allow to cool, check the temperature and offer a small amount while your baby sits upright with you.
Adapt and serve
Check the oat label for gluten and cross-contact information. Do not add honey, sugar or salt, and never put porridge in a feeding bottle.
Follow your child’s appetite; turning away or closing their mouth can mean they have had enough. The quantities describe a small preparation batch, not how much your child must eat.
About this recipe idea
This is an editorial preparation idea, not a kitchen-tested recipe or a clinician-reviewed meal plan. Individual feeding needs differ.

A practical preparation checklist
- Read the whole method and the ingredient packaging before cooking. Set out a clean pan, spoon and bowl.
- Keep the baby away from the cooking area. Stir and check the final temperature before serving.
- Offer a small amount first and keep the remaining preparation separate from the feeding bowl. Do not pressure your baby to finish it.
If the porridge becomes too thick
Oats continue to absorb liquid as they stand. Stir in a little water as needed and check the texture again before offering. Do not assume that a smooth-looking surface means the mixture has cooled all the way through.
Can I make substitutions?
A change in ingredients can change allergens, cooking time and texture. This method has not been tested with alternatives. Use a trusted recipe for the ingredient you want to substitute and follow local advice if allergies or feeding difficulties are a concern.
